Grails of True to Sole: KAWS Jordan 4

If you haven't already read our earlier article on Brian Donelly a.k.a. Kaws, here's a brief introduction: the famous American designer studied illustration at art school, started working as an animator and worked on films for Disney - hence the "cartoony" nature of his style.

But his style was also shaped by the "street": In New Jersey, he also found a home in the world of skateboarding and graffiti, transforming billboards as a guerrilla artist.

He did his first toy figure in 1999 for the Japanese brand Bounty Hunter and after that things started to pick up around him! He has countless collaborations to his name, here's a taste of some of the brands he's worked with:Bathing Ape, Medicom Toy, Undefeated, Supreme, Dior, Comme des Garçons, Uniqlo... and of course Nike!

The KAWS x Jordan 4

As soon as you see this sneaker, your first impression is that you want to stroke the fine, soft grey split leather that's been mostly ripped up on the underside of the tongue and the sides of the shoe.

On the other panels of the upper, you can see the KAWS markings (the figure's hands and his distinctive X-shaped eyes) in the darker coloured leather.

On the heel, the familiar Jumpman logo has been replaced by the KAWS XX symbol in a slightly darker shade than the sneaker's base colour.

The midsole differs from most sneakers in that it's covered in a plush grey effect layer that matches the colour of the upper completely.

The transparent icy sole of the outsole, in a light greenish-grey shade, is a perfect match for the shoe and the KAWS figure detailing is also carried through.

The sneaker was dropped worldwide in March 2017 as part of a collection that included a T-shirt, hoodie, jacket and cap. These were all in black, with the iconic XX in red.
