Over the past few weeks, we've had a lot of you contacting us to ask about the reopening of True to Sole. And if you've been following us on Instagram or Facebook, you'll have seen that "something's up" - a new, much bigger and cooler True to Sole store in the heart of Budapest.
It's not just about moving to a bigger place: when we open in July, you'll be able to shop in a store unlike anything else in Hungary or even the surrounding countries.
But the store opening is not the only new thing: True to Sole has been joined by its founder Attila Pótor and sneaker enthusiast Sebastian Dóra, and with the help of an enlarged team they are embarking on the implementation of the Big Plan. And what is it? Read the interview!
Attila, I'm asking you first! Where did the idea to open a new and bigger True to Sole store come from now?
Attila: In December 2019, when we opened our first store on Petőfi Sándor Street, we realized after the first few days that we had practically outgrown it. Even though the shop was in a "tourist" area, from the first day on, a lot of Hungarians came in to look around, have a high-five - and of course, buy. The interest in limited edition shoes is growing in Hungary and - although it's fashionable to bury the Yeezy fever - they're also very much in demand. They want to walk into a store and, with expert help, immediately buy a guaranteed original limited edition sneaker. That's True to Sole.
And where will the new store be?
Attila: It was important to keep the downtown location because it's easily accessible for both people from Budapest and the countryside, and of course there are tourists. The new store is on Régi Posta Street, just steps from the McDonalds.
Speaking of tourists... we won't be expecting them for a while yet. Have you reckoned with that?
We may not have any tourists at the moment, but we're not planning for the short term. But the main reason why it matters less now is that we are relying and counting on the Hungarian audience first and foremost. Foreigners used to come to the previous shop regularly, but from the very beginning it was mostly domestic customers.
But we are planning a store so that if a traveller visiting Budapest is interested in good sneakers and hype stuff, the True to Sole store will be as much a fixed point in their itinerary as a party in Gozsdu or a visit to one of our famous spas.
Do you have any idea what to expect at the new store?
Attila: We've been looking forward to realising our own vision in a shop of our own, and now is the time. First and foremost: There will be a LOT of shoes, the best-selling silhouettes from the best-selling brands (yes, lots of Yeezy too) And of course streetwear stuff: Supreme, BAPE, Off-White. Both new and like new condition. What's new is that there won't just be resell items: a cool selection of premium sneakers, bags and accessories, and even sneaker art.
What can we do to encourage those who are keen to buy?
Attila: Most of all, by the fact that our entire stock is now available in the truetosole.hu webshop. If you order, you can pick up your new sneaker within a week. But if you can't let go of buying in person, you'll have to wait until July - we're working in full blast on the renovation and we'd like to be ready as soon as possible... But my shop partner Szebi is in charge of the renovation and the shop design.
Szebi, before we get down to business, tell us a little bit about your background when you joined the True to Sole team
Sebastian: Anyone who knows me knows that I've been really into sneakers since I was a little kid. I've never been a reseller, but I've sold and bought in Facebook groups for my own share. And the shoe trade is in my blood, so to speak, as my father owns the national Sebastiano shoe chain (the similarity in name is no coincidence). It has been a dream of mine for a long time to have a sneaker shop and in Attila I found a partner.
Attila has already hinted at what to expect in the new store. You are responsible for the design: what will it be like?
Sebastian: I've been to a lot of foreign stores in the last few years, Flight Club in LA, Sole Stage, RIF LA, Magnolia Park have been great experiences - and of course I've been to a lot of European stores. I've noticed that in many places the resell shops are more like little outlandish boutiques, where even though the stuff is expensive, the design is pretty cheap and unpretentious.
Well, the new True to Sole store will be very different: modern and quality design - the kind where you can put out a cool story wherever you turn. But I don't want to shoot down anything specific in advance. There's a reason we've foiled the shopwindows... come and see us when we open! Trust me, it will be one worth waiting for! The team is already preparing for the opening event - luckily now that's allowed. The opening party will be our first event, but not our last. We have other events coming up, so be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
